Val Sesis

Val Sesis is the valley that, starting from Cima Sappada, leads to springs of the River Piave. The eight kilometres of paved road are passable by car during the summer months.

Other sources of the river, considered sacred to Italy after World War 1, are within walking or biking distance along one of several paths. Val Sesis is surrounded by the Peralba – Chiadenis – Avanza mountain range, and four refuges are located on this side (the Piani del Cristo, Baita Rododendro, Sorgenti del Piave and the Pier Fortunato Calvi).

In Val Sesis we find the highest peak of Sappada, Monte Peralba (2,694 m.), It was also climbed by by Pope John Paul II, to whom the path, starting from the Calvi refuge and leading to the summit, was dedicated.

Along the road leading to the Piave Springs you can reach the Malga Casera Vecchia by walking for a few minutes, where they produce cheese, butter and ‘ricotta’, a cottage cheese. Do not forget to pay attention to the sentinels of the valley, the marmots who are observing you with curiousity as you stroll through the meadows and along the paths!
